False color, ASTER satellite image of Gangotri Glacier in the Himalaya with labels showing the current terminus and approximate past termini. At ~30 kilometers long, Gangotri is one of the largest glaciers in the Himalayas. Though this glacier has been retreating since the end of the Little Ice Age, the rate of retreat at the end of the twentieth century was approximately 3 times the long-term average. Because glaciers such as this feed into the Ganges River basin, there is concern that the melting of such glaciers, and in the long-term their disintegration, may affect the stability of river flow.
