This figure shows the per capita electricity use for the fifty states of the United States. These figures include all electricity use
Individual states are colored based on whether a majority in that state voted for Al Gore (a Democrat) or George W. Bush (a Republican) in the 2000 Presidential Election. As is evident, Democratic leaning states tend to have lower electricity use than Republican leaning states. This pattern was previously pointed out by California Energy Commissioner Arthur Rosenfeld. Following the 1973 Oil Crisis, California began an aggressive program to promote energy efficiency. Largely as a result, California has maintained nearly flat per capita electricity use and now has the lowest per capita electricity consumption of any state in the United States.
